Urban Farming Learning Center for Food Security and Sustainable Land Use
Faculty of Science and Engineering , Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus
Details
The project transformed an underutilized plot within the campus into an Urban Farming Learning Center, serving as a model for creative land use and food security enhancement in urban communities. The site featured pesticide-free vegetable beds, medicinal herb plots, organic egg production, and hydroponic systems, all managed collaboratively by students and nearby residents.
Complementary activities included hands-on workshops such as composting kitchen scraps, biological pest management, and IoT-based soil moisture monitoring with automated irrigation. The center also hosted school visits, offering children the chance to learn and practice urban farming techniques firsthand.
In its first year, over 2.5 tons of fresh produce were harvested, supplying campus canteens and supporting vulnerable households. Skills and knowledge were transferred to more than 600 participants, advancing SDG 2 and SDG 11, and aligning with 2023 indicators 34 and 96.
