Sustainable Canteen Waste Reduction
Faculty of Engineering at Kamphaeng Saen , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
Campus canteens generate an average of 2.5 tons of food waste weekly. This project, led by the Faculty of Agro-Industry and Welfare Division, aimed to reduce food waste by implementing daily measurement systems, analyzing causes, and introducing measures such as portion resizing, pre-ordering, and diverting scraps to animal feed.
Awareness campaigns highlighted environmental impacts of food waste, while surplus edible food was donated to children's homes and elder care facilities.
After 10 months, food waste dropped by 32%, more than six canteens joined the system, and over 1.2 tons of surplus food were donated. The project supports SDG 12 and SDG 13 and fulfills 2023 indicators 34 and 96.
