Smart Analytics of Food Waste in University Canteens
Faculty of Management Sciences , Sriracha Campus
Details
This project deployed a smart food waste analytics platform combining automated weighing and AI image recognition to track quantities and types of food waste in seven university canteens. Data were displayed on a real-time dashboard accessible to students, staff, and vendors, prompting behavior changes in ordering and menu planning.
Partnering with home economics faculty and student clubs, the team designed waste-reduction activities such as portion-size adjustments, “just-right” rice menus, and environmental impact infographics at waste bins. A cross-faculty contest for low-waste menu innovations created motivation and constructive competition.
In the first year, food waste volumes fell by over 25% compared to the three-year average. Data outputs were integrated into relevant courses and student projects on sustainability and data science. The project directly advances SDG 12 and meets 2025 indicator requirements.
