Details

To meet rising demand for protein, the Faculty of Fisheries developed a smart aquaculture system using sensors to monitor oxygen, pH, and temperature in real time. Data was transmitted to a central platform to precisely control aerators and automated feeders, reducing waste and increasing fish survival rates.

The project tested local materials like shells and coconut husks for water treatment and deployed solar panels to cut costs and emissions. Student participation led to further research, including predictive growth models and systemic environmental impact assessments.

In its first year, the system increased productivity per unit area by 28%, reduced energy use by 15%, and cut high-BOD wastewater discharge by 35%. The project supports SDG 2, SDG 9, and SDG 14, and aligns with 2024 indicators 34 and 96.
