Net-Zero Academic Blocks: Deep Retrofit & Heat-Pump Electrification
Faculty of Engineering at Kamphaeng Saen , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
Building on 2024 analytics/RCx, four primary academic blocks were upgraded toward net zero via deep retrofits of envelope and MEP. Roof/wall insulation was enhanced, low-e glazing and tailored horizontal/vertical shading were added per orientation, and systematic air-sealing with pressure monitoring improved airtightness and controlled atrium-to-classroom airflow, directly cutting cooling loads.
Legacy chillers using high-GWP refrigerants were replaced with high-efficiency heat-recovery chillers/heat pumps delivering simultaneous chilled and hot water. Advanced controls with smart mixing valves matched loads to occupancy. Rooftop PV was expanded by 1.8 MWp with 3 MWh battery storage, coordinated through a 48-hour load/PV forecast to schedule charge–discharge and shave peaks.
After one year, base electricity fell 31% and peak demand 27%. Net renewable generation reached 3.6 GWh/year, covering the blocks’ consumption. Recovered waste heat increased by 45%, yielding 2,650 tCO2e annual abatement and 28% lower total energy costs. The project advances SDG 7, SDG 11, SDG 13 and fulfills 2025 indicators 96, 210, and 111.
