Details

To strengthen food security and reduce supply-chain waste, a campus “Food Bank” was established to sort safe surplus from canteens and donors for redistribution to vulnerable students and nearby communities. In parallel, a peri-campus “Safe Produce Network” linked farmers who met basic residue screening and cold-chain handling to deliver consistent, fresh produce.

Operations used an app for donation intake and pickup scheduling, safety verification steps, and pooled cold-chain logistics with the student cooperative. Farmers received trainings on residue pre-screening and crop-specific post-harvest handling to cut spoilage during transport. A weekly safe-produce market was hosted on campus to open direct channels and visibility.

In 2024, the Food Bank redistributed over 48 tons of safe food that would otherwise be discarded, while network farmers’ net incomes rose by ~12% due to reduced losses and direct access. Vulnerable students gained reliable access to fresh and ready-to-eat packs. The project advances SDG 2 and SDG 12 and serves as a live case across multiple courses, consistent with indicators 34 and 96.
