Details

To address organic waste from dormitories and canteens, the Faculty of Environment launched a community composting project processing over 3.5 tons of food and plant residues monthly into high-quality compost. A semi-automated composting system controlled moisture and temperature, reducing odor and accelerating decomposition to deliver usable compost within 45 days.

Workshops trained over 200 students and nearby farmers in composting techniques, vegetable garden applications, and calculating economic returns from switching from chemical fertilizers to compost. Early results showed fertilizer costs dropped by 20% on average and soils became looser and better at holding water.

Beyond economic benefits, methane emissions from unmanaged organic waste were reduced by over 35% annually. The project also built a local compost producer-user network, supporting SDG 12 and SDG 13 and fulfilling 2023 indicators 34 and 96.
