Research and Design of a Prototype Green Learning Building for Urban Communities
Faculty of Engineering at Kamphaeng Saen , Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Details
This research project was designed to create a prototype learning building that is environmentally friendly and tailored to Thailand's tropical climate. Architects and engineers tested low-carbon local materials such as soil-cement blocks and modular lightweight walls, combined with passive design principles considering wind direction and sunlight exposure to reduce reliance on air conditioning and artificial lighting.
The prototype incorporates a solar rooftop system covering 40% of the building's electricity demand, a rainwater harvesting system for sanitary use, and vertical gardens to enhance microclimate and add greenery in dense urban areas. Energy modeling indicates that total consumption could be reduced by over 35% compared with conventional university buildings.
The outputs include detailed blueprints and construction guidelines publicly available for developers, government agencies, and communities to adapt. The project supports SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities, providing a concrete pathway for greener educational infrastructure.
